This program has been a great boost in my confidence as a GIS professional. I finally feel like I belong in the profession. Early in my career I had imposter syndrome because I had not finished my GIS certificate in undergrad studies. I never imagined that I would be able to work full time and go back to school but it can be done with hard work and determination.

I always wanted to be able to do more with GIS than what I was capable of at the time. I did some research and found that Wisconsin geography was well known and had just started the online program. Each course has built on the last one, which is really helpful since it reinforces what you just learned.

A certificate or master’s degree lets you take a deeper dive into areas you might have only gotten a taste of in undergraduate studies or previous work experience. Most of the people who I work with at the CDC have at least a master’s degree in their specialty, and, especially for a position where I’m acting as the resident expert in my field, a specialized program that I could design to fit my career interests was crucial.
