Demand is increasing for experts in Geographic Information System (GIS) software development and web map programming. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has created the Online Professional Master of Science in GIS and Web Map Programming for those who want to develop GIS tools, mobile GIS apps, and fast, interactive, data-driven web maps to solve real-world problems. The program is aimed at people in the GIS field who want to master GIS programming and transition from desktop to web GIS.

The Master of Science in GIS and Web Map Programming allows working professionals and international students in fields such as geography, engineering, health care, data journalism, and natural and social sciences to advance their education, keep pace with technology, and learn new techniques for web mapping and GIS application support. Topics include programming, mobile app creation, and web map scripting.

The online courses allow students to customize the program to fit their schedules, and to earn their master’s in under a year. The instructors are professors from UW-Madison’s Department of Geography, ranked in the top five nationally for geography graduate programs.
