Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in economics with or without the necessary academic background, or want to gain preparation and credentials to continue to a PhD in economics, the UW–Madison Economics: Graduate Foundations MS program will provide you with a strong foundation in econometrics, analytical thinking, and statistical analysis.

Admissions and events

Program requirements

All applicants must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or its equivalent
  • Have completed college-level economics (minimum courses in introductory microeconomics, introductory macroeconomics, and intermediate microeconomics) and three semesters of calculus and linear algebra
  • Submit evidence of English language proficiency, if applicable. See the Graduate School Requirements for more information

Ideal applicants will have completed the following undergraduate coursework:

  • One semester of introductory microeconomics
  • One semester of introductory macroeconomics
  • One semester of intermediate microeconomics
  • Total of three semesters of calculus and linear algebra
