As a student in the UW–Madison Social Work Advanced Standing: Part-Time MSW program, you obtain a broad perspective on the causes and solutions to social problems and develop the knowledge, skills and values to practice advanced social work as a professional. Graduates become leaders across varied fields of social work practice.

  • The program is offered on Saturdays, with in-person classes on campus every other week
  • Choose a focus area to hone your skills: Child, Youth, and Family Welfare or Mental Health
  • The hands-on field internship will deepen your knowledge of social work under the guidance of experienced professional social workers
  • Coursework may fulfill Wisconsin, Minnesota or Illinois social work licensure requirements

Admissions and events

Program requirements

All applicants must:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Earn a passing grade in an approved statistics course
  • Have completed 30 semester credits of social science coursework before applying
  • Have a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree within five years from the academic year of graduation to the academic year of enrollment
  • Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 credits of degree
  • Submit evidence of English language proficiency, if applicable. See the Graduate School Requirements for more information
